In spite of winning the A Grade Grand Final the club is threatened with relegation to Country Division because it came on the bottom of the relegation points table covering the A Grade, B Grade, Senior Colts and Junior Colts.
However, we the committee are firmly resolved to resist any attempt at relegation to ensure that we remain in Central Division where we rightly belong as the Premiership Club. We see relegation of a premiership club as totally absurd and inequitable and one which should not be accepted.
In proscecuting our case to remain in Central Division we are taking steps to have the matter resolved first by way of football avenues and secondly by taking the legal path if necessary.
We have formally requested the Bond to consider how the rules regarding the awarding of points for wins should be interpreted and applied. We contend that finals wins should score points, which would take us off the bottom of the table and out of reach of relegation. But the Board has rejected this contention, holding to the view that points apply to the minor rounds only without any convincing argument in support of this view. It is clear that we will receive no help or support from the Board of the Hills Football League; the President has indicated that the rules (as the Board interprets them) must be followed and Echunga relegated.
As a consequence of this rejection by the Board, we have referred the matter to the SA Community Football League to resolve it in our favour. Under its regulations the SACFL has broad powers to deal with these matters.
Furthermore, we are seeking legal advice on the best approach to take in the event of not getting satisfaction by other means.
